"Double Breasted" refers to the way the coat folds over the chest & buttons closed.
A single breasted coat has one row of buttons down the center of the chest.
A double breasted coat has 2 rows of button down the front of the chest.
There are 3 different ways to make double breasted coats... and we offer all three.

Button holes have been exaggerated in the following pictures...

Real Double Breasting
Has 2 rows of button holes down the one outer front of the coat. It is necessary to button both rows of buttons, inner and outer, in order for the buttons to show.

False Double Breasting actually has only one row of button holes along the outer edge of the coat. A second row of buttons are sewn on to the outside of the coat to give the look of Real Double Breasting without the need to button a whole second row of buttons.

Button-Back Double Breasting has one Row of buttonholes near the edge of both sides of the front of the coat. Only one row is used to button the coat front. Not a good option for Union.

Double Breasted Union Frock Coats

General information about American Civil War Union Officer's Frock Coats

The double breasted frock was not issued. Officer's had to contract for their coats to be made.
This is the reason why there are so many variations in both the Union and Confederate coats.
They were the dress uniform. They were worn for occasions when an officer wished to impress. Typical use would be: reporting to headquarters, on parade, going to a ball, or a valiant last ditch effort to impress the troops in suicidal attack. Fancy frock coats were not worn around camp. Sharpshooters were on the lookout to pick off officer's.

These coats are made from uniform correct Civil War patterns, and are made of uniform quality wool & lined in 100% cotton.
Our uniform patterns came from measuring actual coats in the basement of the Richmond Museum of the Confederacy and many other museums.

Plain D.B. Frock

Basic Description: & *Options*
Body lined in brown cotton, Sleeves and Skirt lined in brown cotton.
Sleeves have *Non-Functional Cuff* in matching color to coat
...(order 2 buttons per cuff separately)
Coat will have *false double breasting* - only one row of real button holes.
US Coats will have *9 Button holes evenly spaced* vertically down front of chest
Coats do not come with buttons...
No *Tail Pockets*
