Single Breasted Union Frock Coats

"Single Breasted" refers to the way the coat closes over the chest & buttons closed.
A single breasted coat has one row of buttons down the center of the chest.
A double breasted coat has 2 rows of button down the front of the chest.

General information about American Civil War Union Frock Coats

The single breasted frock existed in the U.S. military as the dress uniform for the enlisted man. The style was not very practical for fighting in, and at the beginning of the war, a number of frock coats had their skirts cut off... these are commonly referred to as roundabouts.
