INFANTRY & SACK COATS

General information about American Civil War Union & Confederate Sack Coats)

The Sack Coat or Four Button Blouse was primarily issued to low ranking Infantry.
They were called "sack coats" because they fit very loosely, and hung to about mid hip.
They rarely had any trim... rank and buttons being the only decor.

The Enlisted Union sack coat was the most common issued to Enlisted U.S. Infantry of ranks through Sergeant.
It came with:
  • 4 medium Eagle buttons
  • A fold down collar
  • Plain sleeves
  • Fully lined in muslin
  • An inside pocket.
The muslin liners were often ripped out as a source of cloth to bind wounds or clean guns.

Sometimes Medium Eagle buttons were replaced with Large State Seal buttons.
