"Single Breasted" refers to the way the coat closes over the chest & buttons closed.
A single breasted coat has one row of buttons down the center of the chest.
A double breasted coat has 2 rows of button down the front of the chest.
Before the Civil War, single breasted shell jacket existed in the U.S. military as the preferred coat for the mounted enlisted man. (Cavalry & Mounted Artillery) It was also very popular with mounted militia troops. Because this style jacket barely comes below the belly button, the mounted enlisted man has more freedom of movement and is less likely to become entangled with his sword, horse, and other mounted gear... Thus the reasons that it was adopted by the Confederate mounted troops. A number of Infantry troops also adopted the shell jacket troops, or cut the skirts off of their frock coats. The cut frocks have no trim on the bottom edge of the coat, and are commonly referred to as roundabouts.
